Every season brings a flood of new arrivals. Most of it is noise. What follows is the short list of pieces we think will genuinely earn their place — the ones you will still reach for in three years.

Start with the coat

A camel coat remains the most useful single purchase you can make for autumn. Look for a wool content above 70%, a dropped shoulder and a length that clears the knee.

“Buy the coat first. Everything else is easier once it is right.”

Then the knit

Cashmere has become far more accessible. The best value we have found sits under £100.

Finish with the trouser

A pleated wool trouser is the quiet hero of the season, worn with trainers on weekends and loafers in the week.
